FIT FOR THE FLAME

Akin, a new sneaker/streetwear spot recently opened up over by UIC’s campus. Located in University Village on the corner of Halsted and Maxwell the store (1313 S. Halsted) is already becoming a point of interest for out of town visitors and locals wishing to peruse the selection of streetwear that Chicago has to offer.

Ran into Shunte McMillian again. All smiles…I would be too if I was going to see Michael Jordan inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

SAY HI TO LITTLE DRAGON

smeeze-little-dragon-09
Last night I met a friend up at the Kinetic Playground to provide him some help with extra press coverage. I’m really glad he asked because I had a chance to check out Little Dragon. They’re based out of Gothenburg, Sweden and performed in Chicago for their first time last night. Over the last few years they’ve been touring through Europe, but now they’re on a mini tour through the US. You might have heard some of their stuff without even knowing it, their song “Twice” - was featured in Season 5 of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy. So I know all you McDreamy fans know what I’m talkin about. I asked them where their next stop was and Yukimi told they’re headed to Toronto.  More precisely @ Wrongbar 1279 Queen Street West. Check them out, it’ll be a good time.

Yukimi Nagano. What a commanding voice from such a small frame.

I WANNA BE LIKE

smeeze-gatorate-jordan-01
On the way to the private event hosted by St. Alfred x Gatorade as continuation of the “Then. Now. Forever.” campaign, we noticed a large crowd gathered around State and 18th St. at Margaret Hie Ding Lin Park.

Initially I thought everyone was spectating an intense pick up game of basketball but as we got closer to take a better look we saw this sign. Turns out this was Gatorade’s top secret film location for their new commercial.

Instead of going the traditional route of sports action shots for their commercial, Gatorade created a humongous pop art image of Michael Jordan solely out of Gatorade bottles. 19,200 to be exact. Who’s thirsty?

After observing the commercial production for a half hour or so, our nose and ears led us across the street to the food and music. Chilled Gatorade in champagne glasses, classy.

Biz Markie was on the tables steady pumping out good music for the attendees. I was secretly wishing for a live performance of “Just a Friend”. It didn’t happen.

As if free food and good music wasn’t enough, they were also giving out free t-shirts at the event. Hand screened on site courtesy of Mr. Tastees. Thanks again Bogdan.

This is Shunte McMillian aka DJ Reality. He won the ticket raffle to attend Michael Jordan’s Basketball Hall of Fame induction on September 11, 2009. Good thing the flight’s going to Springfield, MA and not New York. What?

Oohhhh. Look at the pretty lights. Reminds me of the ol’ school Lite-Brite.
